?Flatness of barcodes

The tech people here wanted me to post this:

How flat do barcode labels have to be in order to be easily read by a
wand style barcode reader? Sometimes the edge of a label protector is
under/over a barcode on a book. We do not know if that irregularity
will make it hard to read the barcode when we finally automate.
