Wish I had *more* ideas, but how about:

         _You Know Me, Al_ by Ring Lardner (my top choice)
         _Shoeless Joe_ by Kinsella
         _Fried Green Tomatoes..._ or _Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man_ by
                Fannie Flagg (a little long?)
         _Cold Sassy Tree_ by Olive Ann Burns
         _The Screwtape Letters_ by C.S. Lewis
         _Northanger Abbey_ by Jane Austen
         _Edwin Mullhouse..._ by Stephen Millhauser (*brilliant* parody of
                biographies and biographers; fine for this age, I think...)

Many of these are probably too long. Good luck. It would be great to see a
hit on this topic.
