is ability grouping successful?

I'm back with one more question. This same science teacher is interested in
discussing with other science teachers the grouping of students into ability
levels. According to the literature she's read, it is successful at the higher
levels, e.g. honors students, but not so at the lower ones. If you have any
experience in this area, please contact me, and I will pass the information
