Dear LM_NETters Our junior high school of 570 students has been networked recently; at the same time the division has provided funds for hardware and a LAN for information centres in the library. Problems are legion, but the major one is what appears to be a complete divergence of opinion on what role the library and its resources should play in the the learning and teaching of information literacy. Administrtion seems to favour pods of computers in classrooms and (as far as I can make out) a gradual withering away of the library media centre. Teachers would like to have all CD ROMS in their classrooms. Teaching of info. skills now takes place in co-operation with teachers during x-curricular units. The library and teacher-librarian (me) are booked almost solidly for research projects. There is a technology committee, of which I am a member. What I desperately need are any succinct and cogent arguments which support the position that the LMC is the appropriate place for learning to use information and for housing information resources. I have not been able to get hold of an article which appeared in Educational Technology called "Building a Nerve Center"...but it sounded relevant. sorry for the length of this message. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Long live LM_NET! Cheers, Val Nielsen vnielson@minet.gov.mb.ca
