Darlene--I'm so glad you asked this question. I have a few students who
were asking me this recently and I gathered together a mighty list from
several places that I had been storing --and I was so disappointed
(knowing they were somewhat old, I shouldn't have been). All the lists
have the traditional European/American white authors. I gave these to
the students -- they are still good as a basis, but it's time to add some
other new classics of other ethnic groups to the list. I have a few for
starts, but they are at school.

Since the round of discussions on job descriptions/title/etc. are gone
and there's nothing (that I'm aware of) that's the big topic on LM_NET
right at the moment--how about making this our next issue. What books
would you add to a college-bound list? I'll start by giving my ideas
(from home--will add more later from school)
Maya D'Angelou -- any of her books
                Achebe--Things Fall Apart
Gabriel Marquez Garcia-- One Hundred Days of Solitude, etc.
                Alice Walker -- Color Purple
                Nadine Gordimer--My Son (or others)

I'm certain that colleges are now expecting students to be acquainted
with "other-than-European" classics now. What do you all say??
