Dear LmNetters, I am a school librarian at Cartersville Middle School at Cartersville, Georgia (about 50 miles from Atlanta). The Language Arts teacher and I have been planning a unit on Summer Olympics events and famous Olympians for our sixth grade students. We always do a short research unit at the beginning of the year to introduce them to the research process before they do their social sciences project in October. This year we chose the Olympics, for obvious reasons. ha I have already ordered books and the teacher has made a list of the events and people that the students will research. Does anyone gave any suggestions, resources, etc. they would like to share with us? We are especially interested in the students producing an interesting "research product" rather than a paper. We would also be interested in connecting with other students who are planning similiar projects. Last year, the students did research on authors and then wrote them letters including a request to to do a teleconference with them. We received 8 "Yes" answers and chose to talk with a Newbery winning author...it was wonderful. So, we are always interested in using online technology to enhance projects!
