Faced with a 55 minute drive in each direction, I have finally learned to "read" books on audiotape. I admit that it wasn't easy at first; I am a visual reader. Through trial and error, I have learned that I don't do well with books that: --involve lots of technological description; e.g. Tom Clancy. -- have character names that sound too much alike (problem with lots of sci-fi/fantasy) -- take place in locations I can't "see" easily in my mind's eye. -- are very serious/introspective/depressing. Now, the problem is, how do I explain to other faculty members that the reason I was staying in my car in the parking lot was because "I was at a good part, and didn't want to stop"!!! BTW: I've also discovered that many public libraries have excellent audiotape collections -- including many of the children's and YA titles I'm always saying that I must re-read some day. Listening to some of these has given me new ideas for parts to booktalk, as well as new insights into some of the contents. Alice H. Yucht <yucht@zodiac.rutgers.edu>
