networking

I am a current undergrad, soon to be grad student in education.  My specialty
areas are sciences and technology.  I know lots about computers, multimedia,
Internet, etc...  But I am somewhat lacking in the knowledge about networking
computers.
Which bring me to my question:  If I make a computer lab, simply.... what all
will I need to make the lab (and eventually) the school networked?  You know,
hardware/software things....   What networking software is most commonly used
in K-8 or K-12 settings?
Whatever help you can give me would be great.  :-)   (By the way, I like this
listserv group, lots of neat info that gets exchanged!)
