Thanks Carole Pub_HOlpat@midyork.lib.ny.us George Herman "Babe" Ruth died August 16, 1948, at 53 yrs of age. The NY Times for August 17-20 has a series of articles which chronicle his many achievements, including the 54 major league records he held at his retirement from baseball. Aug 19 NY Times, pg 1 - "A special motorcycle detail will escort the cortege to the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Mount Pleasant, N. Y." Aug 20 NY Times, pg 1 - "Along the thirty-mile route to Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Westchester crowds estimated to number another 1000,000 saw the funeral cortege pass." Aug 20 NY Times, pg 11 - "At 1:43 P.M. the cortege reached the cemetery. There at Valhalla, near Mount Pleasant, it was ..." "Father Cauley said the family had not selected a burial plot and that meanwhile the coffin bearing the bronze plate inscribed simply `George Herman Ruth' would rest in a burial vault." = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Westchester County is north of the Bronx. Largest city near Valhalla is White Plains, as I recall. Presumably, this is where he was finally buried. I'd recommend the NY Times articles to anyone interested in a contemporary look at the overwhelming public response to his death. I can think of no other sports figure - certainly none today - who may have attracted the same crowds - but I'll save that for another newgroup ... :-) Randall M.
