THE GIVER for 9th grade?

Our ninth grade teachers want to have their students read this (as a
class with teacher guidance and instruction) and are encountering
resistance from the "powers that be" who think that it may not be
appropriate for 9th graders. Has anyone used this at 9th grade level? We
could use your feedback.
