opinion: (assumption: related to books), but may relate to other "things"

A "CLASSIC" MAY HAVE some or all of THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS:

1. Stand the test of time.
2. Be a perspective of a particular point of view in a time period.
3. Deal with human emotions of the time period.
4. Be representative of a cultural viewpoint during a time period.

Summarized: Time related, quality related, humanness related.
