For those of you who do not know MaryKay Schnare, thought I would fill you
in on a few of the accomplishments that have led to her being named RI
Teacher of the Year. As an LMS, she has superb technical and
organizational skills, and has built outstanding collections in each of
the Providence schools she has served over the years. She is currently at
the Nathan Bishop Middle School, which is both a Library Power and
Carnegie school. MaryKay is a prolific proposal writer, and has brought
over $120,000 in grants into her school. She has also opened the library
every morning before school to increase student access. The before-school
library hours have proven to be highly successful. She has also
revitalized the school's computer lab, and manages the lab (adjacent to
the library) in conjunction with the library media center. She has been a
leader on her school's site based management team, and serves on the board
of the University of Rhode Island GSLIS. In her free time, she has written
two books for LMS's. Against all the odds faced by teachers in a
low-income, urban district, MaryKay has demonstrated a very high level of
commitment to the profession and most of all to the students.
CONGRATULATIONS, MARYKAY!!
