Help with PPP

I'm not sure this is a good place to ask, but I'm having problems with a
modem that a teacher is using on a Performa 550 at home.  It's a Global
Village teleport bronze modem (I think it's 2400 baud, but I'm not sure -
we haven't been able to find it on the modem or in the documentation.)
He's using Config PPP version 2.0.1 and MacTCP 2.0.4.  All the settings are
the same as on my computer except the modem speed.  I have a 14.4 baud
modem, so we set the speed differently.  At that point, the modem dials the
phone and obviously reaches the modem (there's that horrible screeching
sound), but then it seems to just sit there and times out.  Does anyone
have any suggestions?  If not, can you give me a good place to go for
answers to technical questions?

Thanks.  I'm not sure you're the right source for information, but right
now I'm stymied.  We're just getting into the direct connect syndrome and
I'm still looking for LOTS of answers.  Any help you can give will be
greatly appreciated.  You can just answer to me, since this probably isn't
a problem for most of you.
