CNN's "Science and Technology Week" show will highlight the release of the cotton-top tamarins at the Roger Williams Park Zoo [Providence, Rhode Island] and the work of Dr. Anne Savage in Columbia. The program will air on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 11 a.m. and Sunday Sept. 17 at 4 p.m. In addition, the story will be released [Sept 19] to CNN Headline News, CNN International Edition and CNN Airport News. We at the Zoo are very excited about this since many of us were cotton-top trackers over the summer. From 6 in the morning when they generally got up and out [of their nesting box in the trees] until 6 or later when they retired for the night, we watched and observed what happened. They scampered about on the lemur cages and went down on the "tamarin trail" [what had been the dinosaur trail in previous years]. They called back and forth and loved to follow the lemur keeper when she came to feed. Anne works with the cotton-tops in Columbia - using the same radio collars and the punk rock hair [Redkin product]. These little monkeys, they are 6 inches high and weigh about one pound, are very endangered animals. While the golden lion tamarins can be re-released into the wild, the cotton-tops cannot and it is important to find ways to help them survive. Visitors learned what it is like to try to spot a tiny monkey in the trees and to learn to tell them apart...so when you collect samples from them, they can be correctly labeled. The New York Times carried a story on Anne [Tuesday, Sept 13, 1994 - C1 Science Times section] and our local paper did several features. If you or your students have any questions, I will happily forward them to Anne.
