TTERS, Now that I have completed the second week of school as the new media specialist in two small K-6 systems, I have realized something. The children know very little about "information skills." That includes title page, card catalog, how to find books on the shelf, Dewey classification, using the reference sources, etc. I need suggestions for novel, creative ways to teach these skills (I will integrate them into the curriculum even if it means that I have to read each guide personally.) For instance, yesterday I made 50 spine labels (fiction, nonfiction, easy readers) for a third grade class studying animals. All of the books that I chose were books that they could use for a class project. This week they will have to find the books on the shelf (I found out they didn't know how to find the books or where the sections are.) Are there any recently published books with great ideas? Thanks in advance. Marjorie Schor mjschor@aol.com
