Gary Paulsen's The Rifle

Has anyone read Gary Paulsen's fairly new book The Rifle?  It seems like
such a contradition.  Gary Paulsen has written about guns and hunting before
in positive tones.  He begins the book with a very loving description of a
rifle, but he later makes it clear that "guns kill people."  The death at
the end of the book is not an accident that could have occurred easily, but
it was a one in a million event.  I noticed that the book was dedicated in
someone's memory?  Is there a very personal connection?
