This topic interests me greatly as I'm sure it does everyone. This year our junior and senior English teachers are giving extra points to the students who read certain "classic" books. Since most of the students don't like to read much anyway, they only want those which will give them the extra points. If they were <reading> these books, I would be ecstatic; however, I think they are merely using Cliff Notes and watching movies. There's no way most of our students are going to read Bleak House, Return of the Native, Vanity Fair, etc. Since few read for pleasure, I'm happy the teachers assign book reports, but I miss finding books to suit the student. There are so many good YA books written - I would have been in heaven as a teen. I'm not going to tell teachers how to teach (although I've mentioned EBS books to the English department),but I would really like to do something... I suppose I'm asking - do your teachers assign classics? how do you handle this ? Do your students actually READ them?
