GENERAL: Question about Kentucky Barns

Dear LM Netters,

I have a student who returned from spring break in Kentucky and wondered why
the barns there were black not red like in Michigan.  He asked at a tourist
info  place but the worker was unable to tell him.  She said, "What color do
you want them to be, blue?"  Does anyone know of a reason for the barns
being black? TIA
