I agree that memorizing the Dewey numbers for the sake of memorizing them is
not productive, however I don't think it hurts to be familiar with them.
After playing the Dewey Rap (available from Forest Press) for my fifth
graders a couple times, and then having them quiz me (they say a topic I tell
them the number) I did have a rewarding experience. One fifth grader, came
into the library, asked me, "Where are the poetry books?" Then before I could
answer, said "Oh yeah, the 800s!"

Just my two sense.
