I am starting my second year at an elementary school that has had fixed scheduling forever. I think I have convinced my principal that flexible scheduling makes sense, but he will go with whatever the teachers want. The library is small and I have already had teachers complain that their students can't get in to do research when needed, so I am going to start with that. I know that some of them will be hesitant to give up their 30 minute per week block, although it is not release time for them. I am hopeful that I can convince them to change, but I want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row. Can you provide me with any additional arguments, thoughts, or information that I can use to convince them? I want to be well prepared to answer their questions and concerns when I present this to them next week and I'm hoping you may have some ideas that I haven't thought of. After all, hundreds of heads are better than one. I also have a question for those of you using flexible scheduling in elementary schools. Do you still have primary grades come to the library for regularly scheduled checkout or stories? TIA for your help.
