Oh my yes, I have other suggestions! Any of Rosemary Sutcliff's books
about Roman Britain, various Mary Renault books (particularly "Bull from
the Sea" and "The King Must Die"; the one about Alexander the Great
(can't remember the title right now) might have some parts which would be
objectionable to some parents; ditto the ones about the artist (can't
remember those titles either -- some librarian I am!).

There's also a great book about Eleanor of Acquitane and her contribution
to the "rules" of chivalry.
