book chase

I saw a book on READING RAINBOW some time back.  I have looked
through RR sources and come up empty handed.  Does anyone know
the title of a book with a storyline something like the
following:  Mrs. Fuddy-duddy asks Mr. F. if they can buy a
puppy for Jr.  Mr. F. says no.  Mrs. F. gets upset and calls
him a fuddy-duddy.  This hurts him, and to prove he is not, he
heads to the pet store.  He does not buy a puppy, BUT a BABY
DRAGON!  They raise the baby dragon, but when it gets too big
for the house, they ride it to this fantasy island where it
stays and lives happily ever after.  The family returns home
with fond memories of the dragon, but their next pet is a
puppy.  It is a great introduction to fantasy-type literature.
Anyone have any idea?  TIA!!!
