Location of Communications satelites

Dear LM_NETters'

I have a parent who wants to know the location of communication satelites
floating around the earth and how the internet uses them to send messages.
I am not very knowledgeable about the hows of communicating except that I
can communicate.  (I hope that this makes sense).

Can you tell me where to go for more information?  Or maybe you know the
answer.  (Wouldn't that be grand?)
