Here is a hit of my responses to the following question about supervision of student usage on the internet. Sorry it has taken me so long to get a hit posted. Maren Currently I am on a district committee that is looking in the educational uses of the internet. I am looking for information on how student use of the internet is monitored. Do you allow students to do searches by themselves? Do students have to fill out a search request form of some kind? What kind of supervision do elementary students need while using the internet? TIA *************************************************************************** Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 12:38:44 -0500 From: Paul Trotta <ptrotta@connix.com> Right now we are only asking that a student complete an AUP, but we will probably require some kind of search form. We have also prohibited the use of chat rooms--which dramatically reduced the use of the Net, but I don't have any second thoughts on the restriction. We are a small rural school of 400 and can get away with some informality. Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 12:38:44 -0500 **************************************************************************** After the AUP is signed by the students and parents they pretty much have the computer all to themselves. I check to see that they are getting along ok and are not stuck and that's about it. If I see a graphic coming on the screen I always look. So far the students have been great. The difficult part is the training. Taking them through the process of searching and how everything works is difficult. In the next few years as kids get used to using the Internet at home I think it will be easier. Each student who accesses the Internet has a User Contract signed by parents on file with us. They check in with us, we log them in, and they are on their own. We may wander over to the station if we see several students clustered around the station, but so far haven't had many problems. Jones (813) 773-3181" <JONESL2@MAIL.FIRN.EDU> I have used a suggestion from another media specialist- connect the computer to a tv monitor and face it to our office. We can see what the students, and they know that we can see it. Maren Seehusen Library Media Specialist West Bend East High School 1305 E.
