When I was a new library media specialist I had issues to discuss with the principal and he was very difficult to pin down so I decided to write a monthly report. I only had three areas: statistics, projects, and goals. Did this make a BIG difference! He started to listen to me and acted on goals I set up for myself. It was a good tool for me to compare one month to the next: what were my goals and did I complete them? Besides the principal, I send a copy to the other librarians in our district and they started to write reports, also. In my next school I continued my report writing and found my principal used them in writing my evaluation. He said he didn't realize how much I had done! In my current school I thought I'd take a break and not put myself through 20-30 minutes of work. Big mistake. I am now writing reports again so I have a record of where I have been and short term goals so I know where I'm going. The idea of a newsletter is great and I have used that one also, but there are some things that can be included in a report that are more internal and not for the entire staff to read. Just had to put my 2 cents in... Karen Johnson Davea Career Center Addison, Illinois karenj@daoes.tec.il.us Visit our home page at http://daoes.tec.il.us/davea.html!
