Hi Read Jan Buchanan's Flexible Access Library Media Programs. It contains a lot of food for thought and great ideas. It discusses the choice of a flex plan, how to design one, implementation of a flex plan and many other suggestions.(Libraries Unlimited, 1991). I have a semi flex schedule with classes for K-2 and I work with grades 3-6 when they need it.It keeps me hopping, but I love it. Our school district has gone to a Balanced Reading Plan with emphasis on flexible grouping , which puts a lot of pressure and responsibility on all teachers, because these groups can be 3,5,or18 in size and the kids who are not in this group must read or have something to do. A totally flex plan in the library could help in these situations, but it would mean giving up their free period. I feel some situations lend itself to change and this may be one of them. I would love to try a totally flex schedule, but I also have become more creative in my 20 or 30 minute periods, that I think I would miss them, but I could easily be persuaded to try!!! I say GO FOR IT and Good Luck.
