We are not an elementary school; we are a middle school (6-8) that has a school wide theme each year. Our themes have been varied and often related to solving a need or current world happenings. Our themes last for the whole year are teachers weave the theme into whatever curricula they are teaching. The last year of the Olympics the theme was "Personal Best". One year our theme was "Quest" and we explored quests in literature, quests in history and in today's world. We had a Rob Taylor as a guest speaker just prior to his last climb of K2. The key to picking a theme is to make it broad enough to be touched on in all areas of the curriculum. Our elementary schools does a similar activity by call in an "Immersion Day" and spend the whole day in activities around the them, rather than the whole year as our middle school does. Hope this is helpful. Judith a. Naylor Buker Middle School Wenham, MA
