GEN, REF: Language, Hear It to Speak It

One of our E.H. teachers came to schedule some time in the library for her
class today. She said she had told them about a book she read years ago
about a father who locked his daughter in a room (closet, ?), never
speaking to her. When someone freed her, at 13 years of age, she could not
speak, but only grunted, etc. This teacher's students really didn't believe
that such a thing happened, but she couldn't recall the name of the book.
Can any of you help?
