After working together for 24 years, my colleague has recently retired. This presents an opportunity for those of you who are seeking a position in the New York area. Oceanside High School is located on the South Shore of LI in Nassau County. The student enrollment is approximately 1650. The faculty numbers about 150. The LMC staff consists of 2 certified School Library Media Specialists; 1 Senior Library Clerk; 1 Clerk/Typist; 3 Instructional Assistants. Our responsibilities include both AV and Library services to the entire school. I will be meeting with my building Principal on Monday to go over those resumes already received. Interviews will be starting immediately. POSITION: Library Media Specialist (High School) replacement Principal Function: Work with professional staff for the efficient function of the library. The library media specialist will fulfill the dual roles of the school library media specialist as librarian and teacher. Qualifications: The Library Media Specialist should be supportive of the school and the library and their missions; will hold a MLS; will possess state library media certification; will be computer literate; will exhibit good people skills; will understand the school media specialist role as teacher; will like/respect the main constituency of the library, i.e. adolescents; will possess the ability and initiative to take on necessary discipline functions and will exhibit a fair and unbiased attitude in that role; will be able to see how individual tasks fit into the larger mission of the library; will possess an ability to give attention to detail and artistic balance; will have an interest in continuing professional growth and organizations -Candidate should have good people skills and ability to explain things well. -Person should have tolerance for the miniscule and juggling of multiple tasks "simultaneously". -Candidate should be willing to uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights -Person should have knowledge concerning access to information and equity in providing information services -Candidate should be a team member -Person should be someone who likes to teach both students and adults -Person should be willing to do things the way the school needs them done MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: 1. Circulation and Operations: The library media specialist will assist in functions related to circulation of materials and share daily operations of the library. 2. Collection Management: The library media specialist will oversee maintenance of collection and share in collection development activities. 3. Teaching: The library media specialist will teach in full class situations in collaboration with subject specialists and will take an active role in individual instruction as needed to reinforce information research/retrieval skills. 4. Assist in other tasks connected with the library's function. 5. Develop bibliographies and other materials relevant to integration of the information research process and curriculum design. 6. Management of displays: Bulletin boards and showcases are used to display information which relate to library program, special events, and/or those of other departments which integrate use of library resources, etc. OVERVIEW OF THE LIBRARY: The Oceanside High School Library provides services to a large suburban high school with a teaching staff of about 160 professionals and 1600 students in grades 9-12. The media room (Media Center) houses all of the AV resources and equipment used by those involved in the research process and classroom use of circulating titles. The current library staff consists of two professionals (certified School Library Media Specialists) and a support staff of 5, 4 in the Library proper and 1 in the Media Center. The facilities house a collection of about 30,000 volumes, 180+ periodical subscriptions, vertical file, fully automated online catalog and circulation system and multiple CD-ROM databases as well as Internet access.
