I have included my original TARGET statement before the HITS below. Thanks
for the input. Those looking for Electric Library information will find
some good reflections in the HIT list also. I hope to gather more
information in the fall when more folks are with us. Jim Collins

Original Target>

Fellow LM_NETers, I would like to TARGET CD-ROM resources which might be
better accessed on Internet. Infotrac will be requiring two bays on CD-ROM
towers to offer full text data. The single disk which is now available for
microfiche will be phased out this fall. An alternative will be Infortrac
via Internet at about the same price. Why tie up the tower? To complicate
the issue, Electric Library offers a similar service on Internet. I think
it is better in some ways (no bibiographic only citations) than Infotrac's
beta version on Internet. I am also seeking comparisons between
Britannica's CD and Britannica Online. Thanks for your summertime feedback.

Jim -

Great questions - I hope you post a hit. I am also interested in comparing
Infotrac with Electric Library - which is the better value!!

Re: Ency/The Internet etc

This is such a complicated issue and a one involving money too.

I'm woking on an articlke for Tech connections on the subject and after
atteending NECC I find that I am very much enamored of the Internet
resources.

Britannica On-line allows questions to be asked in natural language i.e.
Did Hitler have any children? instead of boolean searching. Infonautics has
a great program that allows for searches and the results come back in a
logical order not just a number of hits. The cost of internet access for
all wokstations is a particular problem but probably was the same when we
started with CD-ROM towers. many of us are in the proces of replacing
drives now anyway.

It is quite a debate and I think right now room for both.

Jim,

Please do post the hit as I think this is an important step that many LMC
directors are looking at. I'll try to summarize some of my
thoughts/concerns here.

Infotrac: I feel the full text is worth the 2 bays or drives it takes up
(I'm going to the optional disk 3 for next year as well.) I have not seen
the online version yet. If your cd-rom's are networked but online access is
not, then you'll want the CD version. If you don't have the CD's networked,
then perhaps online is a better deal. One of the things that needs to be
considered always is the number of simultaneous access points in your
building and the speed of them as they add up.

Electric Library: I've checked them a couple of times, and I'm very
hesitant. Many of the periodicals that our students have used for years are
not available there, nor are there equivalent substitutes. This includes
many of the mainline periodicals indexed by Readers Guide, Infotrac, Ebsco
etc. We use only one periodical index (can't afford more), and when I
analyze the periodicals offered there, it just doesn't measure up.

Question for you, Jim. Should I revisit Electric Library and post to all of
LM-NET my findings/concerns? I see/hear librarians strongly considering
this as an alternative, and I do wonder if they have really checked out
what is there, or more importantly, what is not. I could see it used as an
additional resource, but not to replace your primary periodical index.
