LM_Netters - I was one of those aides that was given the assignment of cataloging - I was 18 years old and given the book on cataloging and the books that needed cataloging. But I didn't give the subject headings - I did what I call preliminary cataloging - author, title, pub., copyright, etc. There was a form that I used to fill in the needed information then the librarian would do the subject headings and the Dewey number. But it gave me a feel for cataloging and when I took my first cataloging class I aced the course. This was long before computers. I really feel if the first librarian I worked with hadn't had me do cataloging, and let me learn it on my own, I wouldn't have been able to understand what the instructor was trying to teach in that first cataloging class. She was a good cataloger, but she wasn't a teacher. I was turtoring about four other students in the class. Since I am still not automated I still use my form for cataloging. I still enjoy original cataloging and really do not want to give it up. I feel I get to know my collection a lot better by doing the cataloging and it is something that I haven't trained my assistant to do.
