I've been following this thread with great interest. It seems interesting that we as a society have forced the public libraries to be interested in nickles and dimes. True, the nickles and dimes from fines (and the NYPL is now 20 cents a day) add up to the person who has been negligent, but the reverse is also true. The nickles and dimes add up for new books when the voters won't give the libraries the nickles and dimes through taxes. A vital library must continually weed and add titles - collection development is as important in the public library sector as it is in the school library sector. I guess we need to look at where we have put our libraries through some of the voters' attitudes across the country. I still contend that we can change this trend with educating the young. At least we can make a step towards progress. Libraries are for all of us. pax.
