In case you were wondering...

Thanks to everyone who wrote. Everyone seems to have the same idea:  The
swastikas and the red covers on the books are probably a coincidence.
The swastika is an ancient symbol used a great deal in India, where
Kipling did a lot of his writing.  The use of swastikas on the book
covers were probably for decorative purposes.

Makes sense to me!  On behalf of our English department, Thank you!
