I read about the libraries that do not back up
their computer data bases. When I am teaching
my basic Macintosh computer class to my teachers
I always tell them the following -
My college prof. was telling our class
about the time he spent an entire morning working
on a document and he hadn't even saved the work
as he went along, much less have a back-up. His
son came into his study and turned his computer off
and he lost everything and had to start over.
The other story is about a basket company
in Springfield, Ohio that had a fire. The president
of the company was called by the fire department
in the early hours of the morning. Because her
secretary had backed up the company's records and
placed them in the president's briefcase they were
able to keep the company going. Many of the people
who had outstanding bills thought they wouldn't have
to pay -- not the case, they did because the company
had the records.
