One of our English teachers has a question which I hope someone on LM_Net can answer. Her class is reading a short story by Herman Melville, entitled "What Redburn saw.....". In the story he uses the phrase a "hater of a Howard." We have no idea what a Howard is and have not been able to locate the answer in any anthology or reference book. Does anyone know this short story and the origin of the term Howard? Please send your answer to me directly at the following address: library@mercy.win.net Thank you.
