This is in reply to the letter about internet use in the library. As a district we just sat down and created an internet application for e-mail and wrote a policy to go in our code of conduct. This is in the beginning stages of language etc., but it is definitely necessary. We have Netscape on 40+ of our computers at the present time. I have posted a brief set of rules for now. They are 1. No chat lines during school hours unless they are approved beforehand 2. No pornographic sites or ones with obscenities 3. No downloading of any applications The chat lines had become a problem as students were coming in to chat at all hours. They can use them during lunch and after school (they are monitored by us as best we can) We don't allow downloading as it will fill up our file server. We also found students downloading programs that would mess up our server. The penalty is a warning the first time. The second time their e-mail and internet use is revoked for a month. So far this is working until our policy is in the code of conduct. Hope this helps. Melissa Hutto Waverly High School Media Specialist Lansing, MI
