SEC:Symbol of Burning Cross

Dear Colleagues:
After consulting several sources we are unable to come up with a clear
answer to the following question:  What is the history behind the
symbolism of the burning cross used by the Ku Klux Klan? We know when and
why it was used but how did this group arrive at this particular symbol?
