TARGET: old story about the "book"

A friend told me about a story he had seen years ago, he thinks the late
60s - a science fiction type of story about this exotic invention which
did all these miraculous things - and turned out to be a book.  He
thought it was written by Isaac Asimov and appeared in an Analog
magazine during that period.  Have checked both Analog files of the
period and works of Asimov.  Does this ring a bell for anybody?  Any
suggestions will be appreciated.  TIA, Rosie
