Patti, barcodes can go either under or on top. If I have a gung-ho parent volunteer who is into applying covers before I get barcodes affixed, the barcode goes on top after the covers has been applied. If I get to barcoding before covering, the barcode is under the cover. Doesn't matter. The only advantage I've been able to see is that if the barcode is under the cover, when you change the mylar cover years down the road, you don't have to cut the barcode off the old mylar cover and stick it to the new cover with a protector. But that isn't any big deal. I've noticed that several have suggested laminating the book jacket covers if the cover is too large for the fold-on covers. I learned, kind of by accident, that the adhesive mylar covers are far superior to machine-lamination. I buy that adhesive mylar in BIG rolls. It is like clear Contact paper, but it is repositionable for the first hour or so of placement. I use it for covering those easy readers jackets that are too big for fold-on covers, and I recently realized I could use the scraps for barcode and spine label protection--just as good as those specialized protectors that come in rolls or little plastic boxes.
