The very best thing we can do for our staff is to help them restructure their assignments so that students have to use critical thinking skills rather than reguritating information. Doug Johnson wrote a wonderful article entitled "Head for the Edge, Copy, Paste, Plagiarize" that appeared last January. This article really cuts to the meat of the problem. We need to provide our students with assignments that make use of their critical thinking skills. We need to get them to write not copy. We need to get them to think about their assignments and write about things that are meaningful to them. Asking the right questions, in my opinion, is one of the best things we can do for our students. It will also eliminate the problems of plagerism. Thanks for letting me get on my soap box! :-) Ruie Ruie Chehak Library Media Specialist Metro High School 1212 7th Street SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52401 319-398-2193 319-398-2117 (fax)
