Well, my last posting was misinterpreted. Let me clarify what my intention in posting that infamous response actually was! While very stressed over the opening of school, I take my mission very seriously. I provide an important service to my patrons -- students and teachers! This does not make me a servant (subservient) for them. I think of my role as one similar to a doctor, lawyer or minister. I help!!!! Many times, I help too much but this is the burden I choose to carry. My teachers, administrators, kids and parents have noticed, and do say thank you! I was attempting to step back from my frustration, reflect on what was occuring and share this with other librarians who were getting slammed by comments about "not being there for kids" by not opening the library on the first day. There is room for both types of librarians -- ones lucky enough/organized enough to open on the first day and those of us (for whatever reason) who do not. This does not mean those who do not open are not committed to providing the best service we can to our patrons. We just have different ways of doing it! My strength is helping teachers prepare for the first day when they do not have a choice about seeing kids. I have the luxury of waiting a few more days, knowing that my teachers are quite capable of teaching them!
