Your note reminded me of a book I used to read to my son (now 14). The
Great Watermelon Birthday by Vera B. Williams published by Greenwill
Books in 1980. I bought it from a wholesaler who used to come to town
selling out of print books--perhaps your friend can find one at the
public or school library. We especially loved the fact that on the way
to our annual family (grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins) vacation
we always passed through Fortuna, Mo. the watermelon party is put on by
the Fortuna fruit company. Thanks for bringing back some pleasant
memories. I knew exactly where this book was because I just could not
throw too many of my son's favorite picture books away.

I just read a review of a book entitled Watermelon Day by Kathi Appelt that
was in School Library Journal. It sounded real cute, and the review highly
recommended it for primary grades. Hope this helps you!

Dear Susan,

One book that comes to mind is ENORMOUS WATERMELON, Rigby Tales,
distributed by Rigby. It's a level 14 Reading Recovery book. I think you
asked for picture books, but I also know of a chapter book that has a
chapter on growing watermelons and then eating them for the first time and
is great to read aloud. It is called THE EDUCATION OF LITTLE TREE, (I
think.)

Sue, I know it's not a book, but I ran across a web site that might interest
your sister. Internet World (Sept. 96) ran a short note about The Watermelon
Home Page at
http://www.watermelon.org
I didn't try it out, but the article says it is put up by the National
Watermelon Promotion Board (NWPB) and "features the requisite too-cute
graphics and more information about watermelons than anyone could ask for..."

Susan, I can't check this right now, but I seem to remember an old picture
book by Jane Thayer--"Mr. Palmer's Wagon Ride" (????) If I remember
correctly Mr. Palmer filled his wagon with watermelons and drove to
market. When he got there they had all bounced out. Darn! Wish the
library were open today so I could run over and check on this.
If there are no watermelons, I apologize. The old brain is aging rapidly.

I've been on vacation, so this reply is delayed by a few days. I ran a
search on my local library's database of books and came up with the
following (brief) list of watermelon books.

_Watermelon Day_ by K. Appelt c1996
_Chestnut Cove_ by Tim Egan c1995
_Willie Wilson's Wonderful Watermelon_ by V. Leaf c1974
_Great Watermelon Birthday_ by Vera B Williams c1980
_Really Eager and the Glorious Watermelon Contest_ c1970

Hope these help!
