The Great Watermelon Birthday by Vera B. Williams published by Greenwill Books in 1980. I bought it from a wholesaler who used to come to town selling out of print books--perhaps your friend can find one at the public or school library. We especially loved the fact that on the way to our annual family (grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins) vacation we always passed through Fortuna, Mo. the watermelon party is put on by the Fortuna fruit company. Thanks for bringing back some pleasant memories. I knew exactly where this book was because I just could not throw too many of my son's favorite picture books away.
