per the request, here is the hit. much gratitude is extended for the 2 prompt responses. From: Andy Carvin <acarvin@kudzu.cnidr.org> To: saunders@NORTHNET.ORG Subject: Re: Ref: Arab Headgear Meaning I'm pretty sure it was originally tribal, but now you can buy any pattern you want. I remember wandering the souks of Amman and Cairo, and there were dozens of patterns available. The red pattern King Hussein wears, I suspect, is for the Hashemite clan, but I noticed that everyone else in Amman, including Palestinians, wore it too, perhaps out of loyalty to Hussein.. The Palestinians usually wear the black and white "ghutra" with a relatively large pattern. (Ghutra is another name for the headdress . The black cord that goes around it in two layers is caled the "eegaal") Palestinians also wear one that is black/white and green. There is another that is green and white--not sure who wears that one. The Jordanians and Saudis often wear the red and white which "ghutra" is known as the "ghutra" of the Hejaz region, referring to the Hejaz mountains in northern Saudi/southern Jordan. Any and all wear white ghutras on some days as well. Dressier? Angus G.
