Please forgive the duplication that is bound to occur. News Release No. 4 (March 27, 1997) EXPAND YOUR CONFERENCE EXPERIENCE WITH A CREDIT COURSE! The School of Library, Archival and Information Studies and the Department of Language Education at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, invite you to enrol in the following graduate level credit course in comparative and international librarianship: LIBR569G: TEACHER-LIBRARIANSHIP AND SCHOOL LIBRARY RESOURCE CENTRES AROUND THE WORLD This special-offering course provides the opportunity to explore international and comparative school librarianship through participation in an international conference as well as through research and study. The "Bridging the Gap" Conference, to be held on the campus of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, July 6 - 11, 1997, will enable class members to interact with school library leaders from around the world. Guest presenters from countries such as Israel, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Iceland will be participating in class sessions. OBJECTIVES To develop an understanding of the development of teacher- librarianship and school library resource centres around the world, and of the trends and issues affecting that development. SCOPE AND CONTENT The components of school library services and programs professional associations and the literature of school librarianship foundations of comparative education/librarianship patterns of development of school library resource centres in regions around the world elements in the development of teacher-librarianship around the world issues in comparative school librarianship such as the role of the teacher-librarian, education for teacher-librarianship, the relationship between school and public libraries, standards and evaluation, technological innovation and support. READINGS An extensive list of readings will be provided. The required text is School Libraries: International Developments, 2nd edition, edited by Jean E. Lowrie and Mieko Nagakura (Metuchen, NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1991). METHODS Lectures, guest presentations, seminar work. EVALUATION Two small seminar reports and a research paper on a problem in comparative school librarianship (topic to be selected in consultation with the instructor). COURSE HOURS During Week One (July 2-5) and Week Three (July 14-18), the class will meet from 09:00-12:00 daily. During Week Two (July 6-11), the class will attend selected "Bridging the Gap" conference sessions and a daily seminar meeting, times to be determined based on the conference schedule. INSTRUCTOR Dr. Dianne Oberg, Associate Professor, University of Alberta. Dr. Oberg's joint appointment in the School of Library and Information Studies and the Department of Elementary Education gives Dr. Oberg the opportunity to work with pre- service teachers, teacher-librarians, and librarians. Her research focuses on the field of school librarianship including the teaching of the information search process and the implementation of school library programs. She is active in school library associations and in the dissemination of research through presentations and publications. Through participation in the International Association of School Librarianship over the past 15 years, she has gained a personal knowledge of school librarianship in many areas of the world.
