On the front page of the Metro section of the 8/6 NYTimes there is an article about how a column written by a woman that was printed in a newspaper is being sent around the net attributed as a MIT graduation speech of Kurt Vonnegut. Not only did he not write those words (although he is quoted in the article as saying that he thought what the columnist wrote was touching and well done), he didn't give the commencement address at MIT. Someone was evidently being cute. Another case for the Information Detectives? (ok, I confess. . . I was the one who told Joyce to post the original to you-all, after she'd sent it to me. Please forgive me for this transgression, but just think -- it does make a great example to use when teaching the need to verify authority, doesn't it?) Alice H.
