I forwarded the following message to myself first, so following lots of
address and signature lines is the actual message regarding changes in
the way OMB classifies occupational titles.

Subject: Dictionary of Occupational Titles

The OMB is developing a new occupational classification system that will
replace the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC), rendering the
Dictionary of Occupational Titles obsolete. So, if your library is
contemplating a purchase of the DOT or you are sent promo material on new
versions I would suggest you hold off until the new system is in place.

The Census/DOL have put together a very informative page which includes a
complete listing of the proposed major headings and occupational titles:

http://stats.bls.gov/soc/soc_home.htm

Look for BLS to mount everything on the web at the new O*Net site -- your
library may want to consider electronic or CD-ROM access to print.
In addition to affecting the DOT and its many related titles, the 2000
Census will be using this new classification system also.
