Thanks to all of you who responded to me and gave the suggestions that you
did. I discovered that you can browse through NPR's program listings for
each program and read the detail for that particular day. Very interesting
reading. I discovered Talk of the Nation's Summer reading list. Very
enlightening. The book I was seeking is entitled The Schools We Need and
Why We Don't Have Them by E.D. Hirsch. I haven't had a chance to do much
but browse through it. However, the NPR piece that sparked all this was on
June 10, 1997. Commentator Katherine Kersten "was concerned that
elementary schools are focusing more on teaching vague "learning tools"
than a facts & figures body of knowledge that kids can actually use. I am
sorry I didn't hear the whole thing and yes I can order the transcript. I
hope Hirsch's book speaks to this issue for that is where my interest lies.
Again thanks to all who responded. Ruie
