Dear LM_Netters:
These are the four responses I received about the =3Dnumbers things in
some of the messages posted here on LM_NET. =20

1)Those people are sending mail in HTML format. They need to turn it
off - you can't.
2)I wonder if it's a response to a return key or some other thing like
that. I've seen email where the author has tried to underline something
and that doesn't work either. I skip them, too!

3)Unfortunately, it's one of the legacies of the Internet...

Most e-mail is sent as ASCII text, that is as nothing more than letters
and numbers. Some software programs, however, can send e-mail as
formatted text, that is with BOLD, ITALIC, UNDERLINING, etc.
Unfortunately, not all e-mail software on the Internet knows how to deal
with that... someone came up with a way of encoding formatting that uses
the equal sign (=3D) as a delimited, to set off "special" codes,
unfortunately, not all software knows how to interpret those symbols. :(

For a longer-winded, but more technically accurate description of the
problem, you can either check the LM_NET archives for a message I posted
several months ago, or the Appendix of the Eudora Pro 3.x manual. :)

4) Those are annoying, aren't they? When I really want to read a post
that's littered with =3Dthis and =3Dthat, I copy it to MS Works and use t=
he
"replace" feature to eliminate the pesky =3D parts (leave the "replace
with"
box blank).

I=92ve sent and received mail in HTML format...and it=92s never looked li=
ke
the =3Dnumbers things.=20
I tried to locate the archived item mentioned in #3, but to no avail. I
tried to email that person, but my email to him/her was returned as No
Longer In Service even though I=92d just gotten that person=92s response.
So, I continue to be mystified!
Thanks to all who responded to me. =20
