Thanks for all your responses. ILOVE my mail! Dewey months came about
as a bolt of lightening this Summer. I haven't even been assigned my
schools yet, I don't know if I';ll have 2 or 3 elem schools and I don't
know what shape they're in but I do know I'll have aLOt of different
teachers teaching alot of different things all the time. Forget it.
I'm not going to make up 200 lesson plans according to what they're
teaching - some will want to plan - some won't - some will come prepared
- some won't. It makes your day CRAZY. SO: This was a way for me to
have a fun theme that I'm interested in, that kids can learn they're
skills from and translate those skills to whatever they're doing in
class, (ie. Spiders can be any animal. Jamaica can be any land.) etc.
Assigning a dewey number to each month seemed a natural plus.So Sept.
will be language month. From ABC books, to making ABC books to looking
at alphabets all over the world to studying about them to using the
dictionary etc.(because I love typestyles and word games) Oct is Spiders
(wgat fun with the WWWEB pun! Make a BB wpider web with an old keyboard
behind it and post great web sites! etc... Nov. National Book week is
national book month for me. How books are made - genres - Judy Freeman's
how to pick a great book - parts of a book. etc. Dec. 300's (holidays
are multicultural!) A fun month full of folktales from all over the
world. Jan and 1/2 of Feb is bios. other half of Feb is Valentines to
favorite characters and love stories. March is Cabin Fever month 900
we'll all go to the Caribbean! Abuela - travel - study favorite
Islands. etc. April National poetry month (800) May maybe Art
(illustrators) and June is Sports and Summer Fun. I'm revved and full
of ideas for this. I really want to make it work, be exciting, keep me
psyched, have a stimulating room etc. Patty <3tunas@vgernet.net> soon
to be Pittsfield.
