Bonnie, This is what I do know: In my very best Southern and dramatic accent, Julius Lester's John Henry and Mary Pope Osbornes Sally (whatever her name is) are jaw dropping read aloud hits. two things: If you also read them Steven Kellogs Sally book you can compare them with a kids vote. Mary Osborns wins hands down - the kids are 1/2 asleep by the end of Kellogs. 2: For lesson Ideas first find yourself Julius Lester's acceptance speech for the Boston Globeor Newbery Award for John Henry. It was published in the Hornbook at the time. It was mesmerizing and I copied it for all my teachers. It was about teaching our children about REAL heroes and how we have a shortage of proper ones. Clearly a hero lesson might be fun and in order. ( pleasew excuse all my spellihng) Also I kind of recall a folksong about John Henry. I remember too trying to get my kids to make up phrases that would be exagerations. "His hair was as red as..." She was as tall as..." They were very unfamiliar with this and enjoyed thinking them up. Good Luck, Patty. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= To quit LM_NET (or set NOMAIL or DIGEST), Send an email message to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu In the message write either: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET or 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL or 3) SET LM_NET DIGEST For more help see LM_NET On The Web: http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
